“But life alters us all. What would be the point of living if we didn’t let life change us?” – Mr. Carson, the butler on Downton Abbey
Happy holidays to all! I’ve been spending my time visiting my sister and falling in love with the television show, Downton Abbey. In this episode another worker in the house has turned down a proposal because she wasn’t who she used to be. She wondered to Mr. Carson if she had made the wrong decision. Mr. Carson’s reply was the most beautifully put piece of advice. “What’s the point of living if we didn’t let life change us?”
What is the point if we don’t let life change us? We all have our own struggles and our own hardships. We have been through heartache and pain. We have lived. Life is altering. Bad times, good times, in between times.
Those things change us. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Change is change. We are wiser, more vulnerable, less naive. We are different. That’s the point of it all, isn’t it? To grow and change and find yourself? If you don’t allow life to alter you some, you will never find a new adventure. Life full of joy and peace and sadness and disappointment. Life is up and down and all around, and it is supposed to be. When life changes, so do we. As the new year approaches, welcome change – welcome life.
